How do you know if the Martial Arts (BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA) school you joined is the right one for you?

The truth is, there are many factors that come into play when deciding whether or not a Martial Arts school is right for you. Whether you’re just looking into it, or you’ve already enrolled and began your journey in the Martial Arts, it’s critical to ask several questions.

But let’s narrow it down to the most important questions. First, why have you decided to look into Martial Arts training? Here are a few of the most common reasons people train:

  • To learn realistic Self-defense
  • To get in shape (going to the gym is boring)
  • Watched UFC, wanted to learn something new
  • A friend told them about how fun it was

Let’s say you want to learn effective, realistic self-defense techniques. You want to know with certainty that you can protect yourself and your family if their lives are in danger.

So here is what you should ask when looking at the website or visiting the school in person:

  1. What style or styles does the school teach?
  2. What is the evidence that this style actually works in a real street-self-defense scenario?
  3. What are the qualifications of the Instructor?

Out of these three questions, Number 2 may be the most important and the most controversial.

self defence

At Paramount BJJ in Downingtown PA, we teach the Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu system, created less than a century ago by Helio Gracie in Brazil. The style was perfected on the streets of Brazil, where fighting is normal, and accepted.

How do we know it works?

There is actual footage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students fighting – in the streets, in rings, and in dojos against bigger, stronger men and martial artists of every style. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu wins approximately 95% of these fights. That’s a track record unparalleled in the Martial Arts community.

Many of our students have been forced to use their Jiu-Jitsu training in real life altercations, and they have been 100% successful.

But we also teach Muay Thai, an extremely efficient striking style proven effective in the UFC, and Boxing, the traditional striking art of the United States. We also have MMA fighters. And we’ve got entire families who train together for self-defense and fun.
