While there is a governing body for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (the IBJJF), they do not and cannot “police” the World to check on martial arts academies and make sure the instructors are legitimate Black Belts.

So it can be difficult for students to know whether or not their instructor is truly qualified. This is not the case, however, when the instructor is or was an active competitor.

The head instructor at Paramount BJJ, Brad Court, is n IBJJF National Champion, 2x IBJJF Pan American medalist, IBJJF Boston Open Gold medalist, and IBJJF Miami Open Silver medalist. Check out one of his matches from the 2012 Boston Open:
