When it comes to takedowns, there is no grappling style that beats Wrestling. Even though Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) utilizes throws and takedowns, because the goal is submission there is less emphasis on the takedown. And Judo emphasizes the throw at all costs, which often times results in losing the top position immediately after the initial throw occurs.

So at Paramount BJJ, we’ve brought in wrestling coaches to help improve our takedowns and confidence on the feet. 90% of BJJ schools start their live training (AKA “sparring”) from the knees, which only ends up hurting the students.

Wrestling Class

Because most BJJ schools neglect to train their takedowns as much as Paramount, we are at a distinct advantage when it comes to grappling from our feet in competitions. Even though some of our students prefer to work from their guard and look for sweeps and submissions, they have the confidence to attack from the feet if they choose to.

If you train at a BJJ school and your instructor doesn’t emphasize throws and takedowns, as him or her if they would consider showing more standing techniques in class, or bringing in a wrestling or judo coach.
